- Character #1 She joined the crew as a thief planning to rob it, and spent years stealing from pirates for a reason nobody on board knew about until she finally broke down and asked for help. She draws charts, and is the only one aboard who can read the weather.
- Character #2 You get there by being fired several thousand metres straight up on a column of seawater, and the ground when you arrive is not ground - it is cloud you can stand on, walk on and build on. The residents have wings and consider the sea below a myth.
- Character #3 It belonged to a girl who died at eleven, after falling down the stairs the night she had made a promise about which of them would become the greatest. Her father handed it over to the boy who had lost two thousand fights to her and never won one.
- Character #1 He ate something as a child that cost him the ability to swim, in a world made almost entirely of water, and has never once treated this as a serious problem. He wants a title rather than a fortune, says so to anybody who will listen, and is generally assumed to be joking right up until he is not.
- Character #2 A bounty-hunting company where nobody knows anybody's real name - the men are numbered, the women are named after days and holidays, and the pairs are assigned rather than chosen. Almost every employee believes they are working towards a legitimate goal.
- Character #3 Enormous cubes of a material nobody has managed to break, scattered across the world and usually built into something else - a wall, a throne, an altar - by people who had no idea what they were standing next to. The writing on them is in a script the world has forgotten.
- Character #1 He fights with three blades, one of them held in his teeth, which should not work and does. He cannot navigate his way out of a corridor - hand him a map and he will arrive somewhere else entirely, and insist that everyone else got lost.
- Character #2 She can turn anyone who desires her to stone, which in practice is nearly everyone, and she is entirely aware of this. She is also a former slave with a brand she hides, and the cruelty is armour rather than character.
- Character #3 He is a walking poison - every part of him, at will, in quantities that fill corridors - and the one thing that reliably takes him out of a fight is his own digestion, which sends him to a lavatory for hours at a time.
